Founded by brothers Jose Castillo & Pedro Castillo, alongside brothers and chefs Carlos Arellano & Felipe Arellano, the pairs of brothers started their careers in the restaurant industry as dishwashers and began to envision bringing Oaxacan cuisine to New York. Their dream came true when they opened their Astoria location in 2021.

Ruta Oaxaca means “Road to Oaxaca,” which is a historic state in the southern part of Mexico. Oaxacan culinary traditions gained its fame in great part from its many varieties of moles, which by legend are more than ancient sauce recipes, but the very focus of the meal. Four proudly featured moles can be found on the menu, each prepared using the Oaxacan mole recipes that have made the cuisine world famous.

Their menu is not limited to Oaxacan cuisine, it features dishes from all across Mexico. As, when you travel on the road to Oaxaca, you pass Mexico City, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Morelos, as well as other cities, so the owners wanted to highlight delicious dishes from those locations in addition to “the best of the best” you get in Oaxaca. The chefs harken back to many of their mother’s much-loved recipes, such as the moles and the handmade tortillas made fresh daily. They consider their food to be “home gourmet,” using old fashioned methods while serving dressed-up plates.
